چکیده

• Increasing evidence has accumulated to support the juxtaglomerular cell rather than the proximal tubular cell as being the site of renin formation in the kidney. The determination of the site of renin is important to the elucidation of the mechanism of stimulation of the renin-angiotensin pressor system. Goormaghtigh^ first demonstrated changes in the juxtaglomerular cell which indicated a secretory function and this led him to hypothesize this cell as the source of renin. More recent microdissection and fluorescent antibody studies are in accord with Goorniaghtigh's findings.

Sustained Renal Hypertension

Antirenin to hog renin produced in the dog neutralizes the acute pressor effect of dog as well as hog renin. A course of intramuscular injections of hog renin in chronic renal hypertensive dogs produces an antihypertensive effect which is correlated with the antirenin titers of the plasma. Passive transfer of high titer homologous antiserum to hog renin produces an antihypertensive effect in ch...

Juxtaglomerular cells.

• Because juxtaglomerular (JG) cells are sprinkled throughout the renal cortex, just as beta cells are sprinkled throughout the exocrine pancreas, the classical extirpation and substitution approach in endocrinology is a limited means for the study of their function. Until they can be isolated and pure extracts made, or until an "alloxan" for JG cells is discovered, their study will depend chie...

Characterization of the Renin-antirenin System

Rabbit antibody capable of neutralizing the pressor activity of the enzyme renin, derived from hog kidneys, was characterized with respect to type and capacity to react serologically. Three antirenin antibodies were detected, both a precipitating and nonprecipitating, neutralizing antibody as well as a neutralizing antibody capable of being absorbed by inactivated renin. The precipitating, neut...
